Quiz Maker: Hand teachers a quiz for your book.
A school librarian loves your book, then asks if it has an Accelerated Reader quiz. It does not, and a teacher who would have to write one may reach for a different book instead. Now you can hand over a finished quiz, written from your own pages.
Included with membership at $10/month or more.

What changes
Be ready when the quiz question comes.
The question usually arrives after a librarian has already said she likes your book. With a quiz in your hand, you get to say yes.
A book a teacher can say yes to
A teacher who loves your book no longer has to write its quiz before using it. The evening stays theirs, and your book is the easy choice.
Thirty wrong answers you never write
Writing a quiz is duller than it sounds. Ten questions can mean ten right answers and thirty wrong ones that are believable without being unfair, and that is an afternoon you would rather spend writing.
A quiz you can trust before it goes out
Renaissance does not let a published quiz be edited, so a wrong answer stays wrong in front of every student. You can check each answer against your own book quickly, then hand the quiz over without a knot in your stomach.
A quiz that treats readers fairly
Students who finished your book should feel rewarded, not tricked. A quiz that follows your story from the first chapter to the last gives the child who read every page a fair shot.
Type it in and move on
A teacher or librarian can type or paste your quiz straight into Renaissance and be done, with no hunt for the details the form asks for first.
A printed quiz for the kitchen table
A homeschool parent can print the quiz, hand a child a pencil, and keep the answers on a page of their own. No quiz software and nothing to log in to.
Wording that fits the child
Choose Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced, and the quiz sounds like it was made for the child holding it, whether that child is seven or thirteen.
One book, two quizzes
One book, a quiz for every room.
Say you wrote a middle grade mystery. A school librarian loves it and wants her students reading it, so you give her the Renaissance version to enter. A homeschool mom down the street wants a Friday check for her twins, so she gets the printable one, with the answer key on the last page. You wrote one book, and two people's weeks got easier.
Where it helps
Use it wherever your book meets a reader.
Start with the moment in front of you. The same quiz can serve the next one.
When a librarian asks about AR
Say yes, then hand over a quiz written from your own pages. Ask the librarian or teacher to look it over before it goes into Renaissance.
Before you pitch a school
Give teachers a reading check that comes with the book. Put it in your first email, so the teacher sees a book that is ready to use.
After a school visit
Leave the quiz behind, so your book keeps working after you have left the building.
Before launch day
A finished manuscript is enough. Have the quiz ready, so the first invitation from a school gets an easy yes.
For book two, book five, and the backlist
Each book gets its own quiz, so the whole shelf is ready and not only your newest title.
When you teach at home
A homeschool parent prints the quiz for the book a child just finished, then checks the answers against the key on the last page.
For a book club or reading group
Readers who finished the book like to prove they paid attention. Print a short quiz as a warm-up before the discussion starts.
Bring your book and choose your quiz.
You bring
Your manuscript as one file. Then choose the quiz format (Renaissance AR entry or Printable PDF with answer key), the reading level (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced), and the number of questions (5, 10, 15, or 20). Renaissance allows at most 10 questions, so that format stops at 10.
Your manuscript stays private. Author Media never stores or views it, and the AI companies do not train on it.
You get
Choose Renaissance AR entry and you get a Reading Practice quiz ready to type or paste into Renaissance's teacher-made quiz form, with the book details Renaissance asks for first (fiction or nonfiction, chapters read, and the word count when available) and a pointer to Renaissance's free ATOS Analyzer for the book's level. Each answer comes with its chapter and a quote from your book, so you can check it fast. Choose Printable PDF with answer key and you get a quiz with A to D choices to print for a student, with the answer key on its own page at the end. Expect questions covering the whole book instead of clustering in the opening chapters, each testing literal recall of an important event, in book order, for fiction and nonfiction.
Quiz Maker does not enter anything in Renaissance for you. A teacher or librarian with Renaissance access does that, and Renaissance decides what its program accepts. Quiz Maker is not affiliated with or endorsed by Renaissance Learning, and its quizzes are not official Renaissance quizzes.
Accelerated Reader quiz questions, answered.
What is Quiz Maker?+
Quiz Maker is an AI tool in the Patron Toolbox that writes a reading quiz from your book. Your manuscript, a quiz format, a reading level, and a number of questions go in, and a quiz comes out, either ready to enter in Renaissance's teacher-made quiz form or ready to print with an answer key. It is made for authors, teachers, librarians, and homeschool parents.
How do I make an Accelerated Reader quiz for my book?+
Choose Renaissance AR entry in Quiz Maker and run your manuscript. You get a quiz a teacher or librarian can type or paste into Renaissance's teacher-made quiz form, so it is ready before anyone asks. Check every answer first, because Renaissance does not let a published quiz be edited.
Is this an official Accelerated Reader quiz?+
No. Accelerated Reader and AR are registered trademarks of Renaissance Learning, and Quiz Maker is not affiliated with or endorsed by Renaissance Learning. Its quizzes are not official Renaissance quizzes. They are written from your book for a teacher to enter as a teacher-made quiz.
Will Renaissance accept my quiz or give my book AR points?+
Quiz Maker cannot promise either one. It gives you a quiz ready to enter, and Renaissance and the teacher's school decide the rest. Renaissance works out points from the book details a teacher enters, including its word count and level, so ask the teacher or librarian what their account allows.
Who is Quiz Maker for?+
It is for authors who want their books in schools and libraries that use Accelerated Reader, for school librarians and teachers who need a quiz for a book that has none, and for homeschool parents who want a printed quiz. It works for indie and traditionally published authors, and for fiction and nonfiction. A teacher, librarian, or parent can run a book too, as long as they have its file and the right to use it.
How many questions can I get?+
You choose 5, 10, 15, or 20 questions. Renaissance allows at most 10 questions in a teacher-made quiz, so the Renaissance format stops at 10. The printable format offers all four lengths.
What reading levels does it cover?+
You choose Beginner (ATOS 0.1 to 2.9), Intermediate (ATOS 3.0 to 5.9), or Advanced (ATOS 6.0 and up). The level changes the wording of the quiz, never the kind of question. Renaissance's free ATOS Analyzer takes a manuscript file and gives you the book's own level.
What kinds of questions does it write?+
It writes recall questions about the important events in your book, from beginning to end, in book order. Each has one correct answer and three wrong options that are plausible rather than obviously filler. It does not write discussion, opinion, or analysis questions.
Does it work for nonfiction books?+
Yes. For nonfiction, the questions cover key facts, terms, and sequences from your book. For fiction, they cover characters, setting, important events, and outcomes.
Can I print the quiz for a student?+
Yes. Choose Printable PDF with answer key and you get a quiz with A to D choices to print, with the answer key on its own page at the end. It suits homeschool parents, teachers, and reading groups who do not use any quiz software. Look at the last page before you hand the pages to a child, to be sure the key is on its own.
Will the answers be right?+
You are the one person who can confirm every answer, so read the quiz against your book before you hand it over. In the Renaissance format each answer comes with its chapter and a quote from your book, so checking is quick. That matters because Renaissance does not let a published quiz be edited.
Can I change a question I do not like?+
Yes. Ask in the chat to replace a question, change the level, or fix an answer, and you get the full revised quiz back.
Does a quiz spoil the book for people who have not read it?+
Yes, a recall quiz mentions what happens in your story. Hand it to students who have read the book and to the teachers who assign it, and keep it away from readers who are still deciding whether to buy.
Can I use it for a series?+
Run each book separately. Each Accelerated Reader quiz belongs to one book, so a series needs one quiz for every title.
Can I use it before my book is published?+
Yes. A finished manuscript is enough, so your quiz is ready when the first teacher or librarian asks. If you revise the book afterward, run it again so the quiz matches the final text.
What if my book has no chapters?+
Quiz Maker spreads the questions across equal stretches of the book instead. Look the quiz over to be sure it reaches the whole story.
Is there a limit on how long my book can be?+
Yes. The upload has a size limit, so a very long manuscript may not go through. Ask in the Novel Marketing community if yours does not.
Can I use it for a book club?+
A printed quiz works as a light warm-up for a reading group that has read the book. It tests recall, not opinion, so for discussion questions use Discussion Guide Builder.
Is my manuscript private?+
Yes. Author Media does not store, track, or view anything you post to this tool. The tools reach each AI through its business API with privacy set to the maximum, so the AI companies do not train on your words.
How much does it cost?+
