Not a Developmental Editor: Enjoy revising your book again.

You know your draft could be stronger. The hard part is deciding what to change. You can open your draft with a clear next step and look forward to making it stronger.

Included with membership at $10/month or more.

Turn “something is not working” into a change you can investigate. Keep the decisions about your book in your hands.

Make the next draft easier to follow.

You want readers to love the story, understand your ideas, or connect with the life you have lived. Focus on the experience you want to create.

  • Fiction: give readers a reason to turn the page

You want readers to stay up for one more chapter. Come back to your story with a sense of direction and the excitement that made you write it.

  • Nonfiction: help the reader follow your thinking

You want the ideas that matter to you to matter to someone else. Revise with your intended reader in mind and the satisfaction of making yourself understood.

  • Memoir: find the thread through the events

Your experiences matter, and you want a stranger to care about them too. Keep the experiences that serve the memoir you want to write.

Use the feedback for the decision in front of you.

Start with the question that brought you here. You do not have to accept every suggestion to find one useful next step.

  • When you keep revising in circles

You can get unstuck without starting over. Choose a change to try while keeping the parts that already work.

  • Before you send the draft to an editor

Work through concerns you can address yourself, then take unresolved questions into the editorial conversation. Walk into that conversation able to say what you want to improve.

  • Before you submit sample chapters

You want those first pages to represent the book you believe in. Give them another pass with confidence in your choices, without treating a critique as a prediction of an agent’s or publisher’s response.

What authors say about the feedback.

Personal experiences with Not a Developmental Editor. Doug’s comment describes the October 2025 update.

“The suggestions were excellent. I write biblical fiction and it understood the nuances of my writing.”

“I ran my short story through it. The new version provides suggestions that read a little clearer to me and make it easier to take action on in some fashion.”

Bring the draft you are ready to work on.

You bring

Upload a book, short story, or selection of chapters as a .txt, .doc, .docx, or .pdf file, choose the book type, and add any concerns you want to address.

Your manuscript stays private. Author Media never stores or views it, and the AI companies do not train on it.

You get

You get written AI developmental feedback to help you choose your next revision.

Feedback on selected chapters is limited to that selection. AI can misunderstand your intent or miss a problem, so check each suggestion against the book you want to write.

Before you begin

Does this replace a human developmental editor?

You stay in charge of your book, and you still need human judgment. This is AI feedback, not a replacement for a human developmental editor. Use the feedback to prepare questions, and keep suggestions only when they serve your intent.

Will it fix grammar or rewrite the book for me?

You can give the big questions about your book your full attention before polishing sentences. You make the revisions. For spelling, grammar, and copy editing concerns, use Not a Copy Editor when you are ready for that stage.

Can I use it before the whole book is finished?

You do not have to finish the whole book before asking for help. Keep moving while the rest of the draft takes shape. Feedback on part of a book cannot establish whether the complete story or argument works.

Can I use it for children’s, middle grade, or young adult books?

You want young readers to connect with your book too. Yes, this is also for authors of children’s, middle grade, and young adult books. Keep your intended readers in mind and seek human feedback where needed.

What if I already know what worries me?

You can tackle the worry that keeps pulling you out of the writing. Keep that concern at the center of your next revision, without feeling obliged to change everything else.

Is my manuscript private?

Yes. Author Media does not store, track, or view anything you post to this tool. The tools reach each AI through its business API with privacy set to the maximum, so the AI companies do not train on your words.
