Comp Finder: Know which books yours resembles.
The query letter asks which books yours is like, and your mind goes blank. The ad dashboard asks which authors to target, and every guess feels like money down the drain. You can walk into either one with comparable books, or comps, in hand and the confidence to say why they fit.
Included with membership at $10/month or more.

Pitching an agent and running ads call for different books, so you choose the moment you are in. Look each book up yourself before it goes into a query, a proposal, or an ad.
Your manuscript stays private. Author Media never stores or views it, and the AI companies do not train on it.
Your next step
The right books for the moment you are in.
The same book can need two different lists. Pick the moment you are in, or come back for the other one.
The query letter: sound like you know your shelf
Agents and editors ask which books yours sits beside, and a vague answer can sink a good letter. You can name books they may recognize and say why yours belongs with them, so the question stops feeling like a trap.
The ad dashboard: reach readers who already love books like yours
Choosing authors to target is the part of ad setup that feels like throwing darts in the dark. You can walk in with names of authors whose readers may enjoy your book. The same names can help you pick newsletter swap partners.
When a book is close but not the same
Know when a close match is close enough.
Say your novel is a cozy mystery set in a small-town bakery. A popular small-town romance might feel close, because many of the same readers could love both, and yet it promises something different. You see how a book like that differs, so you can decide whether it belongs in your proposal, your ad audience, or neither.
Bring your blurb and a clear picture of your reader.
You bring
Your book title, back cover copy, target reader, and a manuscript or sample chapters (.txt, .md, or .docx) go in, and you choose Book Proposal or Advertising.
Your manuscript stays private. Author Media never stores or views it, and the AI companies do not train on it.
You get
A list of comparable books comes out, each with why it fits and where it differs from yours.
One search can come back with a short list, and you can ask for another. Reply in the chat to search again, and name the angle you want, such as newer releases or one theme. Check every title on Goodreads or Amazon before you use it.
Before you search
What is a comp title?+
Not knowing the jargon can make a query letter feel like a test. A comp, short for comparable title, is a published book similar enough to yours that an agent or editor can picture where yours belongs. Authors also use comps to choose whose readers to target with ads. Agents and editors tend to like comps that are recent and recognizable, and they can read a runaway bestseller as a stretch.
Should I choose Book Proposal or Advertising?+
If you are not sure which you need, ask who will read the list. Choose Book Proposal when an agent or editor will read the comps, such as in a query letter or a proposal. Choose Advertising when you want authors whose readers you can reach with ads or newsletter swaps. If you need both, search once with each choice.
Can I trust that every comp is a real book?+
Naming a book that does not exist in a query letter is a fear worth taking seriously, so check every title before it goes anywhere. The research behind a list can be wrong or out of date. Look each comp up on Goodreads or Amazon, read enough of it to know the comparison holds, and keep only the ones you would stand behind.
What if a comp is in a different genre from mine?+
A book on a different shelf can still share your readers or your premise, and that can be useful when you choose it on purpose. You see where it differs from yours, and you decide whether the difference matters for your purpose, because an agent and an ad platform will judge it differently.
What if it finds few close matches?+
Few close matches is not a verdict on your book. It can mean your book offers something the current shelf does not, which is worth saying in a pitch. It can also mean the search found little, so try another search with a different angle.
How many comps will I get?+
A short list is normal, and you can build it up. The list can come back short, and you can ask for another search. No set number is promised. Reply in the chat to search again, and name an angle such as newer releases, your target reader’s niche, or a theme the first list missed.
Can I use it for nonfiction?+
Nonfiction authors can use it, though it was designed with fiction in mind, so the matches may be looser. Describe your reader and the problem your book solves clearly, and check that each comp serves the same reader.
Do I need a finished manuscript?+
No, you can start while the book is still in progress. The form asks for a file, and sample chapters work. Your back cover copy and reader description are worth the most care. If you do not have back cover copy yet, Book to Blurb can help you draft it from your manuscript.
Is my manuscript private?+
Yes. Author Media does not store, track, or view anything you post to this tool. The tools reach each AI through its business API with privacy set to the maximum, so the AI companies do not train on your words.
How much does it cost?+
